Yamaha Motor Australia Acquires Telwater in Major Marine Industry Shift
Boating

In a significant development for Australia’s marine industry, Yamaha Motor Australia Group has acquired Telwater Pty Ltd, the nation’s largest aluminium boat manufacturer — housing iconic brands including Quintrex, Savage, Stacer and Yellowfin.

The transaction is part of BRP Inc.’s broader strategy to divest several marine businesses in North America and internationally, including its Australian subsidiary.

The acquisition — announced by both Yamaha and BRP in April — is expected to close over the coming months, pending regulatory approvals.

Telwater: A Strategic Fit for Yamaha

Headquartered on an 8.6 hectare site in the Gold Coast Marine Precinct in Coomera, Queensland, Telwater is known for manufacturing the well-established Quintrex, Stacer, Savage and Yellowfin boat brands, as well as Move Trailers. It employs over 250 staff and services a network of more than 220 dealers in Australia and the South Pacific.

Quintrex has been manufacturing boats in Australia since 1945.

Canadian recreational vehicle manufacturer BRP acquired Telwater in August 2019. It was BRP’s third boat acquisition, and its first outside the United States. It represented a strategic push to further integrate its marine engine manufacturing with boats, with the goal to transform the marine industry as it did for powersports. Telwater’s boats were subsequently factory fitted with Evinrude outboard engines owned by BRP, and more recently, the experimental Rotax Stealth engines.

However the company’s bullish expansion into marine markets has been wound back, precipitated by BRP closing down Evinrude, the world’s oldest outboard engine brand, during the Covid pandemic in 2020.

José Boisjoli, President and CEO of BRP, stated:
“This is a decision we have taken seriously. Over the past few years, we have been putting the foundations in place to expand our Marine business. However, the current global landscape has forced us to reevaluate our strategy and focus our efforts on projects that offer the best return on investment.”

BRP will also divest well known American boat brands Alumacraft and Manitou. Coastwatch spoke to Garret Koschak of BRP, Telwater & Manitou at the Sanctuary Cove Boat Show.

It has opened the door for Yamaha to step in, with the acquisition of Telwater a logical step for both parties. The acquisition is intended to strengthen the foundations of Yamaha Motor’s marine business, and the company aims to not only expand its sales network in the country but also reinforce the foundations of its outboard motor business.

The acquisition strengthens Yamaha’s footprint in Oceania’s marine sector and aligns with its global goal to offer complete boat-motor-trailer solutions. Yamaha’s technological advancements in digital controls, marine electronics, and helm systems are expected to complement Telwater’s trusted boat designs.

Yamaha added:
“This collaboration will allow both companies to leverage their respective strengths and continue delivering high-quality products and services to customers.”

Operations to Continue Unchanged

Telwater will continue to operate as a stand-alone business within Yamaha Motor Australia Group.

Despite the change in ownership, both companies have affirmed that no operational disruptions are expected at Telwater’s Coomera facility during the transition period.

Yamaha’s official statement confirmed:
“There are no expected changes to Telwater’s management, operations or dealership network.”

The continuity ensures stability for Telwater’s existing workforce and its dealer and customer base across the region.
