Recap of Monday’s Severe Storm

Earlier this week, Southeast Queensland experienced a record-breaking thunderstorm on November 24.

  • • Originated near Lismore, NSW, and tracked 1,400 km up the Queensland coast.
    • Hailstones: 10–14 cm diameter.
    • Winds: 120–130 km/h.
    • Impacted Gold Coast, Brisbane, Moreton Bay, Sunshine Coast, Fraser Coast, and Capricornia before dissipating near Mackay Tuesday morning.
One of the most severe storms in recent memory.

Thursday 27 November Update:

⚠️ Severe Weather Alert – Southeast Queensland

Today is expected to bring significant severe thunderstorm activity across Southeast Queensland. Here’s what to watch for:

  • Scenic Rim: One or two strong storms likely.
  • Burnett District & Sunshine Coast: Multiple powerful supercell thunderstorms forecast.
  • North of Brisbane:
    • Damaging to locally destructive wind gusts
    • Heavy to locally intense rainfall
    • Giant hailstones—conditions could support hail similar to Monday’s record-breaking event.

Some of the most dangerous storms today could produce hailstones up to 8 cm in diameter—or larger. These storms may be dangerous and long-lasting.
