Coastal Weather Outlook: Southeast Queensland & Northeast New South Wales

Friday 5 December 2025

  • General Conditions: A high-pressure ridge in the Tasman Sea keeps skies clear and waters calm. Excellent day for boating and fishing.
  • Winds:
    • Southeast Queensland: 5–10 knots, gusts up to 15 knots (northeasterly).
    • Northeast New South Wales: Stronger, 15–20 knots, gusts up to 25 knots offshore (due to inland trough activity).
  • Seas & Swell:
    • Southeast Queensland: Seas around 1 metre, swell also near 1 metre.
    • Northeast New South Wales: Slightly rougher offshore, but manageable.
  • Temperature:
    • Brisbane area: Warm, mid-to-high 20s°C.
  • Storm Risk:
    • Inland NSW thunderstorms possible, but unlikely to reach the coast.

Saturday 6 December 2025

  • General Conditions: Clear skies, warm temperatures, and calm seas. Saturday is the standout day for outdoor and marine activities.
  • Winds:
    • Morning: 5–10 knots (northeasterly).
    • Afternoon: 10–15 knots, gusts up to 20 knots.
    • Evening: easing back to 5–10 knots.
  • Seas & Swell:
    • Southeast Queensland: Swell drops slightly, generally below 1 metre.
    • Northeast New South Wales: Very small swell, around 0.5 metres or less.
    • Capricornia Coast: Slightly higher, up to 1 metre.
  • Temperature:
    • Brisbane: Around 30°C, warm and sunny.
  • Storm Risk:
    • None expected. A calm, settled day.

Sunday 7 December 2025

  • General Conditions: Starts calm, but conditions deteriorate late in the day as a trough approaches. Severe thunderstorms expected in northeast New South Wales, later in southeast Queensland.
  • Winds:
    • Morning:
      • Northeast NSW: 20–25 knots, gusts up to 30 knots offshore.
      • Southeast QLD: 15–20 knots, lighter on Sunshine Coast (5–15 knots).
    • Afternoon: Winds freshen further, variable gusts due to storm activity.
    • Evening: Winds remain moderate (15–20 knots) in southeast QLD until storms arrive.
  • Seas & Swell:
    • Southeast Queensland: Swell drops to 0.5 metres or less.
    • Northeast NSW: Offshore seas bumpy, gust-driven.
    • Capricornia Coast: Around 1 metre.
  • Temperature:
    • Brisbane: Warm, humid, around 30°C.
    • Humidity builds ahead of storms, making beach conditions pleasant until late evening.
  • Storm Risk:
    • Northeast NSW: Severe thunderstorms from mid-afternoon (~2–3pm). Risk of dangerous gusts 100–125 km/h inland, coastal gusts 60–70 knots possible.
    • Southeast QLD: Storms arrive later (Gold Coast ~8–9pm, Brisbane ~10pm). Winds remain moderate until storms pass.
    • Safety tip: Be back in harbour by 6:30pm to avoid storm risks.

Tides (Friday–Sunday)

  • Low tides: Early morning (~midnight) and mid-afternoon (3–4pm).
  • High tides: Late morning (8–10am) and late evening (~10pm Sunday).
  • Fluctuations: Up to 2 metres across southeast Queensland and northeast New South Wales.

Summary

Friday: Calm seas, light winds, should be perfect for boating.

Saturday: Best day of the weekend — warm, clear, calm waters.

Sunday: Calm start, but thunderstorms possible in northeast NSW by afternoon; southeast QLD spared until evening.
