Issued at 4.50pm 20th June for 22nd & 23rd June 2024

Weekend Outlook

Charts: There’s a high centred over South Australia on Saturday, expected to move over Victoria and Tasmania on Sunday. It extends a ridge over the Qld coast. There’s a low in the Tasman Sea near New Zealand, also moving slowly east and extending troughs off the NSW and southern Qld Coasts. The combination of these two systems will likely cause S/SW winds along the southern Qld Coast

SE Qld Weather Outlook Saturday & Sunday – Offshore Waters Double Island Point to Coolangatta

Cloudy or partly cloudy, with 70-80% chance of showers both days and possibly a storm north of Cape Moreton on Saturday. Winds are predicted to be 15-20kts Southerly on both days

SE Qld Weather Outlook Saturday & Sunday – Moreton Bay

It should be cloudy, with a 60% chance of showers on Saturday and partly cloudy and fine on Sunday. On Saturday, winds are predicted to be light W/SW early in the morning, becoming light and variable during the day and 10-15kts Southerly in open bay waters on Saturday night. On Sunday, the prediction is light SW/S winds early in the morning, becoming 10-15kts Southerly during the day in open eastern bay waters and a bit lighter in the western and southern bay

Tides & Moon: It’ll be full moon on Saturday night, so there’ll be big tidal differences and at this time of year, the biggest high tides will be at night. On the weekend, at Brisbane Bar cutting at the mouth of the Brisbane River, there’ll be early morning and afternoon lows and mid morning and late night highs. Click this link for precise tide times and heights at various locations

Swell & Coastal Bars: The swell looks likely to be 0.5-0.75m SE/E on the weekend. If you are going offshore, although the bars should be workable, take care crossing them, particularly on the afternoon ebb tides, when the water running out through narrow bar channels can create pressure waves, which are bigger than swell size and break unpredictably

Sailing & Boating: If the wind predictions are right, there’ll be enough wind for pleasant sailing, particularly on Sunday. Boating conditions in offshore waters will be choppy to very choppy and conditions should be better close inshore, where the wind should be a bit lighter.

On Moreton Bay, expect seas to be a bit choppy at times in open northern and eastern waters and much better close inshore. The best cruising and anchorages will be in the more sheltered waters in the western bay, Pumicestone Passage, the southern bay, Southport Broadwater and in the rivers and creeks

Fishing: Based on the weather predictions, it’s looking like conditions for fishing in small boats in offshore waters will be choppy to very choppy and choppy, but workable in open Moreton Bay waters, Conditions should be good for beach fishing, particularly early in the mornings and the more sheltered waters in the western bay, Pumicestone Passage, the southern bay, Southport Broadwater and in the rivers and creeks will be best for small boat fishing. To help you plan your weekend angling, the latest SE Qld Fishing Report was published on the Coastwatch web site this afternoon

Surf: Expect the swell to be about 0.5-0.75m SE/E on the weekend and there should be small waves on the beach breaks and the points, although the points will be a bit full either side of the morning high tides. You can check the latest surf conditions with the daily Surf Report published about 5.50 every morning

Beach: A cool weekend is expected. The forecast air temperature is 20-21° and water temperature is about 19-20°. The bays on the north side of the headlands at Noosa, Mooloolaba, Burleigh, Kirra Greenmount and Rainbow Bay are best when the wind is southerly, which it looks like it will be on Sunday. There’s inshore holes and gutters along the open stretches of beach and any rips and sweep working around them, will be enhanced as the water drains off the beach on the afternoon ebb tides, so swim in the patrolled areas marked by the red and yellow flags. For the latest beach conditions, check our daily Beach Report published about 5.50 every morning
