AVALON II | Episode 3

“Assegai Marine; Barry & Craig Martin”

The Avalon II Re-fit marked one of the first major projects that Craig Martin had tackled since reviving the legendary company made famous by father, Barry Martin.

Avalon II’s owner, Peter Toohey remarks :

“ I joke that she’s a Pleysier / Hunt from the Wheelhouse down and an Assegai from the flybridge up”.

Toohey lauds the exceptional quality of the huge amount of custom work Craig and the Assegai team undertook, and what was achieved.

The project drew Barry Martin himself out of retirement. Barry advised on various aspects of the Avalon II project, including the lines of the magnificent new flybridge.

Barry’s last boat was the stunning gameboat “Deploy”, before he closed the doors on Assegai after 30 years. Craig Martin has re-opened those very same doors, working out of the same shed Barry did.

Toohey calls the Martin’s result a “work of art” and in this Episode, we hear from both Barry and Craig Martin on the work that went into the project, which extended well beyond the flybridge to below decks also. We hear about the Assegai re-launch and Barry’s excitement at Craig helming the company (Craig being involved at a young age in every Assegai build with his father — except the very first).

Peter Toohey gives great detail around the scale and specifics of the flybridge, hard-top and wheelhouse rebuild, as well as inside detail on various aspects of the fit-out, fittings and finish.
