Wayne Deane – April 1994

03:39

From April 1994 this surfer profile by Glen Palmer on Wayne Deane. Since the 60’s when he started surfing, Deane had been a standout on the southern Gold Coast point breaks and a local hero. He chose the simple life rather than hit the pro circuit, but did come back to competitive surfing in the early 90’s and in 1991 he won the World Longboard Championship.

Wayne sadly passed away in 2018 at the age of 66. Over five decades, he became one of the most respected figures in Australian surfing—claiming 19 national titles, shaping countless boards, and earning a place in the Australian Surfing Hall of Fame. His craftsmanship, quiet strength, and commitment to protecting the Gold Coast points cemented his status as a true icon.
