From the Coastwatch Vault, this John Charlton surfing story on the big swell hitting the southern Qld coast on Monday 24th May 1999. It features tow in surfing from Luke Egan, Sasha Stocker, Pat Glennon and Bruce Lee. Our cameras were also there to capture the real life drama as Darren Hanley was wiped out on his jet ski off Snapper Rocks and fought to stay alive as he was washed around to off Coolangatta and was eventually rescued by Shane Bevan on another jet ski.
