Nerang River Whiting – Ross McCubbin

06:34

From the Coastwatch Vault, tips on catching quality sand whiting in the Nerang River from experienced local angler and fishing guide Ross McCubbin. The best technique for catching these fish is to anchor the boat nose to current, using a back anchor if the wind is swinging the boat. Best tackle is long soft tip rod, like a 4136, a 6″ Alvey reel and a 1.2m trace. Sinker size depends on tidal run. Best baits are mud, blood or canal wriggler worms and for bigger fish during the day, small black soldier crabs. Laying the rod down and not touching it until the fish has taken the bait is most important, as you will spook them if they feel any movement in the bait apart from it wafting in the current.
