From the Coastwatch Vault, this story by Clint Hempsall on Ciguatera, a nasty poison in fish was produced in July 1999, but the valuable information about what Ciguatera is, where it comes from and how we can avoid catching it is still relevant today. The researcher in the story Dr Richard Lewis is now Professor Richard Lewis and is with the Institute for Molecular Science at the University of Queensland. He recently advised that Ciguatera research is still going on, albeit slowly, due to lack of funding and as yet an affordable way to test fish for it before eating them has not been developed
