Big Whiting – The Pin
From the Coastwatch Vault, this story shot in March 1994 is on catching big whiting in the Jumpinpin area. The anglers were all closely associated with local fishing legend Rudy Maas, who had passed away the previous year; his grand daughter by marriage Barbara Maas and 2 long tern friends Ron Cundy and George Confoo. They were fishing in Rudy’s famous old put put boat and using Rudy’s tried and true technique of anchoring the boat nose to current and using long soft tip rods and Alvey reels. The sinkers they use are bigger than would be expected, to anchor the bait and help hook the fish when they grab it. Their traces are very long, at least 1.5m which allows the fresh worms baits to waft naturally in the current. As you’ll see this technique works.
