Mirimar

This is a story we did in June 1994 when the famous boat Mirimar turned 60. Over the years, thousands of people were transported on Mirimar, either on the Brisbane River or across Moreton Bay. Sadly she now is disrepair laying on the hard in a Brisbane shipyard.

Tossa Turner’s Queenslander

From the Coastwatch Vault, this story was produced by Sky Kinninmont as part of the part of the 1999 Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show Coastwatch Special. It’s about Queensland State of Origin legend Dick “Tossa” Turner’s 30ft sailing cat, Queenslander. One of the most popular stories produced for Coastwatch, it features “Tossa” sailing his cat with a crew of State of Origin greats, Wally Lewis, Trevor Gillmeister, Bob Lindner, Mark Hohn and Greg Oliphant. Tossa passed away in June 2008, but his Queensland State of Origin legacy lives on and he will never be forgotten.

Avoiding Collisions

Just like we need them on the roads, there are rules on the water that must be followed so we all don’t run into each other.

Apart from always operating your vessel at a safe speed, the most basic of these rules is to always give way to a boat approaching from your starboard or right side and always turn to starboard to avoid a collision if one is imminent.

This video from the Brownies Coastwatch Vault clearly shows how this rule works.
