Fishing Report for 4th September 2025
Hervey Bay / Fraser Island
On the inshore reefs, snapper are being caught in good numbers along with grunter and plenty of flathead across most areas. Jewfish have been taken off the pier, with some smaller school mackerel also present. Bream have been reported over the darks, mostly biting at night on the last of the flood tide. Herring have returned, particularly around the rock groynes and Shelley Beach, with night sessions more productive and the bite improving during northerly winds. Winter whiting are active in Gatakers Bay, Scarness, and west of Woody Island, producing good numbers and sizes, especially around the new and full moon phases.
The artificial reefs are producing plenty of cod and blackall. The rocky peninsula off River Head has been productive for flathead, jewfish, blue salmon, bream, tailor, and mackerel. Deep spots such as the Fathom Hole and Rooneys are also worth targeting. Coral trout have been caught over the darks, with northern bay reefs providing good results. In the Burrum system, threadfin salmon and barramundi remain active, with coral trout and sweetlip taken around the southern gutters.

Tin Can Bay
This weekend might be a bust if the wind picks up like forecast. But with wind aside and a good run in the tide, the crabs are on the move. Snapper Ck, Teebar and the flats around Carlo have all been producing well. Working the snags should turn up a few cod or bream. Floating small live baits back into the structure can also pick up mangrove jacks. There have been some legal-size tailor up the creeks, taking both lures and baits. Flathead have been caught on the runout along the flats out the front of Teebar.

Whiting are about in good numbers, making it a productive time of year for them.
Mangrove jack were also caught this week, with two landed just past the car ferry at the first bend before Lake Cooroibah, both taken on prawns. Sooty grunter are widespread through the river, showing up at most stops. Northern Moreton Bay
Threadfin salmon have been caught at the mouth of the Brisbane River late at night around the lights, with snapper also taken off the front rock wall. Around Mud Island a few snapper have started to show in 3 to 5 metres of water. Over at Raby Bay, bream, whiting and flathead have been moving onto the flats and pushing back into the systems after their spawn run.
The mouth of the Pine River has produced flathead, with a few jewfish caught around the rock bars and bridges on the tides. Further up the river good numbers of bream have been taken along with some quality whiting, which have also been seen around Hayes Inlet.
Redcliffe has fished well for grunter and snapper in 3 to 5 metres of water early and late in the day, with plastics and lightly weighted baits working best. The Caboolture River has been quieter, though flathead have been caught at the mouth along with a few bream.
In the Passage, mangrove jack have started to fire in the creeks and the odd barramundi has shown up as well. Whiting have been active across the flats, while bream have been caught in the canals around Banksia.
Offshore fishing has been slow with limited reports due to the weather, but improving conditions this week should bring better updates.

Moreton Bay/ Jumpinpin
Moreton Bay has been fishing well recently and should improve further this weekend with the approaching moon and stronger tides. Shallow-water snapper are starting to show with rising water temperatures, with some quality fish caught on the northern side of Peel Island and just off Raby Bay Boat Ramp along the five-metre drop-off. Green Island has also been holding good snapper, sweetlip, Moses perch and decent squire. Lightly weighted jigheads around 1/8 to 1/6oz have been working best, and these areas are expected to fire over the weekend.
Pelagic activity has been limited this past week, with a few reports of mackerel around northern Peel Island. Some jewfish have been caught near the Saltworks, Southern Macleay Island and Coochiemudlo Island, along with good schools of tailor in the same areas. Flathead have been active around the southern Bay islands, including Garden, Lamb and the tip of Russell Island, particularly on the run-out tide.
Jumpinpin is starting to fire as flathead move into spawning areas, with large jewfish over a metre taken in the Pin Bar area. Plenty of flathead in the 75 to 85cm range have also been caught, and numbers are expected to rise over the next month. Tailor are abundant, especially during northerly winds when whitebait push in. High-tide areas such as Cruso Island, Gold Bank and the lagoons have been productive, while low-tide edges around Jacobs Well Channel, the Bedrooms and Tipplers have been effective for flathead and bream. Threadfin salmon are on the move from the southern Bay islands through to Sovereign Island, particularly around deeper drop-off edges and current lines, and remain worth targeting.

Jumpinpin
This week the Pin has produced standout numbers of flathead, with plenty of fish over 85cm taken right across the system. Soft glide baits and similar lures have been effective for many anglers. Whiting have also picked up, with live bloodworms and yabbies on long shank hooks proving best, paired with sinkers to suit the depth and tidal flow. Large tailor have been moving through as well, with fish up to 65cm caught on live pike.

Gold Coast Broadwater
The perfect weather is coming to an end with SE winds picking up on Saturday. Early, increasing high tides leading up to the full moon will see whiting catches improve. This week produced good numbers around the sandbanks near Wavebreak, with wading the shallows the most productive method. Light line, little or no weight, and yabbies on the run-in tide are key for wading. Plenty of smaller fish are taking baits, but fish up to 38cm were caught this week. If you put in the time, you should head home with a good feed of solid fish.
Flathead are in great numbers, with better fish coming from the deeper sections near the seaway and Pin Bar. With the bigger tides, they’ll push back into the shallower areas before sitting off the edges on the run-out. Tailor are still spread right through the system, but the beaches are holding the better numbers and quality. Look for deeper holes with some whitewater spilling over the back edge from the outside bank. The gutters down at Main Beach are producing well at the moment, with good spots right up to the Spit.

Southport
Fishing in 24 to 36 fathoms has produced snapper, cobia and tuna in good numbers and size. Mixed reef species including Moses perch, pearl perch, blue spot flathead, tuskfish and teraglin have also been caught. With the September school holidays approaching, calm ocean conditions are hoped to continue.
| BK’s Gold Coast Fishing Charters Ph 0414 293 034 | https://bksfishing.com.au/ |
Snapper have been fishing well offshore on the 24s and the 18s, with some excellent quality fish landed. There have also been plenty of cobia about. It’s worth casting a lure at anything floating on the water such as palm fronds or other debris, as baitfish often gather around it and cobia move in to feed.
Inshore, flathead have been all over the flats and there have been some quality whiting around Wave Break Island taken on worms. Bream are still about around pylons and bridges with the cooler water keeping them active. Squid have also been caught in good numbers around Bayview Harbour and near Sea World.

Tweed Coast
Fishing is much the same as last week, with flathead still in their spawn period. The bigger fish are starting to move, and anglers are chasing the larger ones, hoping for that elusive metre-plus flathead. Offshore, some wahoo and Spanish mackerel are still being caught, along with plenty of longtail tuna. Reef species including snapper and tuskfish are still active, though they’ve been a bit more cautious this week, possibly due to the moon and tide alignment. Rivers are beginning to clear, and the focus is on the larger flathead while bream remain active. A few big jewfish have also been taken at the river entrances and off the headlands.

Brunswick Heads
Boaties heading out to the FADs have caught very good quality snapper, pearl perch and dolphinfish. Along the beaches and rock walls, bream and blackfish have been active, with some small soapy jewfish also taken. Rivers have produced good quality bream, blackfish, whiting and flathead, and a few mud crabs have been caught as well.

Evans Head
Around Airforce and Main Beach, anglers can target bream, school jewfish and flathead in the gutters. Tailor are active around the rock walls at the river mouth, along with bream, luderick and jewfish. In the Evans River, bream, flathead and whiting have been caught, with some anglers heading to the upper reaches for mud crabs. Offshore on the coastal reefs, snapper, trevally, jewfish and amberjack are all being caught in good numbers.

Yamba
The river is starting to clean up, with the lakes and channels looking much better. Flathead have been caught further up where the water is clearer, and the warming weather has helped with the bite. Bream are still being taken around the main rock walls, though the main body of the river remains dirty on the run-out tide. The incoming tide is bringing cleaner water and better fishing. There are still reports of blackfish in the river and the odd mud crab has been caught, though numbers should improve as the water warms and clears further.
Offshore has fished well with some quality snapper caught in shallow water on jigs around the southern grounds. On Saturday, snapper between 60 and 70cm were landed, and there are still schools of longtail tuna active offshore.

Maroon Dam
Maroon Dam has been active early in the mornings on topwater, with small creature baits and poppers pulling some nice fish. As the sun rises, small crankbaits and blades along the edges have been effective, while in deeper water soft plastics on a quarter ounce jighead rolled slowly on the bottom have found fish. Bass have also been up the creeks as well as in the main basin near the ski club.
| Charltons Fishing Ph (07) 3818 1677 | www.charltonsfishing.com.au |
Moogerah Dam
At Moogerah Dam the fishing has also been consistent. Anglers have been finding good fish around the spit and the bay beside it, with metal spoons, soft plastics and lipless crankbaits along the edges working well.
| Charltons Fishing Ph (07) 3818 1677 | www.charltonsfishing.com.au |
Somerset Dam
Somerset Dam has been fishing really well with some solid bass taken off the edges. Lipless crankbaits have been the go-to, especially the Jackall TN60 worked with a slow roll along the edges. In deeper water, soft plastics rolled across the bottom or metal spoons have been producing bigger fish. The bass are spread right through the dam from the main basin up into the timber.
| Charltons Fishing Ph (07) 3818 1677 | www.charltonsfishing.com.au |
North Pine Dam
North Pine Dam, also known as Lake Samsonvale, is fishing well with some big bass landed recently. Soft plastics on half ounce jigheads worked in the deeper water have been getting results, especially three inch paddle tails. There’s still an edge bite early and late in the day with spinnerbaits and lipless crankbaits a good choice for that bite.
| Charltons Fishing Ph (07) 3818 1677 | www.charltonsfishing.com.au |
Kurwongbah Dam
Kurwongbah Dam has produced good bass on the weed beds with small blades, crankbaits and chatterbaits. In the deeper water soft plastics and 15 to 20 gram spoons rolled through the schools have been catching bigger fish.
