COASTAL WEATHER OUTLOOK for South East Qld — January 30th
Sunday the Pick of the Weekend for Marine Activities
January 30, 31 & February 1 2026
By Josh Toohey, Coastwatch
Boaters across South East Queensland can expect mixed conditions this weekend, with Sunday shaping up as the best day to get out on the water.
Friday and Saturday will see fresh southeast winds, bringing gusty and choppy conditions along the southeast coast. These winds are expected to push a few showers ashore, making conditions less comfortable for boating and offshore activities.
Conditions improve on Sunday as winds swing around to the northeast and ease, creating much calmer seas. Forecast wind strengths are expected to sit around 5–10 knots, increasing to around 15 knots at times, particularly along the northeast New South Wales coast.
For Queensland waters, gusts are forecast to remain below 15 knots, while gusts south of the border may reach up to 20 knots.
Wave heights are expected to sit around one metre, making Sunday the most favourable option for boating, fishing, and water-based activities.
While isolated showers and thunderstorms may still develop, overall marine conditions on Sunday look significantly better than earlier in the weekend.
Boaters are encouraged to make the most of the calmer conditions, enjoy the water responsibly, and stay up to date with the latest forecasts via the Coastwatch website.
