Wet Conditions Ahead Heavy Rain and Severe Storms Expected This Weekend

February 13th, 14th, 15th 2026 — Issued 9pm, February 12th

By Josh Toohey, Coastwatch

Southeast Queensland is set for a very damp weekend as a series of low‑pressure troughs moves across the region. These systems are expected to bring widespread rain, thunderstorms, and blustery coastal conditions from Noosa to Tweed Heads, including Brisbane and the Gold Coast. While the weather won’t be ideal for outdoor or marine plans, the upcoming rainfall will also offer some welcome relief to drought‑affected areas.

The low pressure system is creating convergence zones—where southeasterly and northeasterly winds collide—triggering intense evaporation and thunderstorm development in an already moisture‑laden atmosphere. Tropical moisture surging into the region will further fuel the system.

Major Rainfall Expected

High rainfall totals across the region, expected;

  • 150–300 mm expected along the southeast coast, including Brisbane and the Gold Coast
  • 450–500 mm possible in the Gold Coast Hinterland

This heavy rain is forecast to fall across Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with severe thunderstorms likely, particularly on Friday night into Saturday.

Flood Risk Rising

While the rain is welcome in drought‑affected areas, it comes with a heightened risk of flash flooding and minor to moderate riverine flooding. Because catchments are extremely dry, rivers will rise slowly at first, with more noticeable increases expected by Friday night into the weekend.

Flood watches have already been issued by the Bureau of Meteorology, and conditions may worsen again on Sunday as another round of convergence‑zone activity develops.

Marine Conditions Hazardous

Strong easterly winds coupled with storms will create dangerous marine conditions, making this weekend unsuitable for boating, fishing, or coastal recreation. We are hoping for conditions to improve next wekend.
