Fishing Report

Hervey Bay

Grassy sweetlip, coral trout and cod on the deep inshore reefs, coral trout and grunter bream on the shallow reefs, spotty mackerel off Point Vernon and in Platypus Bay, longtail and mack tuna throughout the bay, trevally, mackerel, flathead, garfish and pencil squid off Urangan jetty, sand whiting along the town beaches, garfish around the groynes, flathead, grunter bream, threadfin and blue salmon in the lower reaches of the Mary River and mangrove jack in the Burrum River and creeks that run off Sandy Straits.

The swell and strong winds have made the ocean beach hard to fish. Try for chopper tailor on the northern side of Pt Lookout and along Flinders Beach and bream at night around Amity Point and Dunwich.

Southport

Recent flooding has put a lot of dirty fresh water and debris into Southport Broadwater.  Fish the wider reefs for cleaner water, avoid the rivers and creeks until the flood water stops running and set mud crab pots around foreshores adjacent to creek mouths.

Spotty mackerel and cobia at Palm Beach reef, mangrove jack in the canals and bream, whiting and flathead in the lower reaches of Currumbin and Tallebudgera Creeks; best on the flood tide as there is still quite a bit of fresh coming down on the ebb.

There’s a huge amount of freshwater runoff coming out of the Tweed River and creeks. There could be debris coming down the river, keep extra alert if you are boating.

FRESHWATER FISHING

Boondooma Dam

Bass and a few golden perch located with sounder on trolled lures along the middle reach of the dam.  The Stuart and Boyne Rivers are discoloured due to freshwater runoff.

Bjelke Petersen Dam

Golden perch on jigs and live bait close to the timber towards the dam wall.

Lake Kurwongbah

Bass and saratoga at dawn and dusk on surface lures around the dam edges and bass during the day on chatter baits cast to the edges.

Bass on trolled spinner baits along the newly flooded banks.

Somerset Dam

Bass on trolled crank baits around Bay 13 and Pelican Point and saratoga on brightly coloured spinner baits and shallow diving jerk baits in the bays in the upper reaches.

Moogerah Dam

Bass on chatter baits and deep crank baits in about 8 metres along the old river bed.

Maroon Dam

Bass on chatter baits and soft plastics in the upper reaches of the creek and tilapia on worms off the bank; remember tilapia are a noxious pest and should be disposed of in the bins provided.
