From April 1996 this story by John Charlton on the swell off cyclone Beti. The open beaches were big and dangerous, but despite this the clubbies went ahead and held the Australian Surf Life Saving Titles at Kurrawa. This was a bad decision in hindsight and resulted in many injuries to competitors and the death of young surf boat rower Robert Gatenby. Noosa and Kirra had good rideable waves with Kirra being the best and the locals carved it up.
