Fishing Report for 27 June 2024
Australian Bass closed season all Queensland tidal waters from 1 June to 31 August.
Hervey Bay
Bream up to 42 cm at Urangan Pier, mostly on herring. A few flathead, blue salmon and some bream in mainland local creeks, accessible by foot. Inshore reefs yielding snapper (more squire) but enough around the deeper inshore reefs and in Platypus Bay. Grunter out wider, around outer banks.
Offshore exceptional and a melting pot of all species. Gutters producing spanish mackeral, grassy sweetlip, red emperor and venus tuskfish. East of breaksea spit: pearl perch, snapper, various cods, red throat. The current has been stronger around Waddy Point; with minimal current north of Breaksea Spit. Lots of Kingfish and particularly Amberjack offshore in 50m to 200m.
Deep dropping to north finding pearl perch, snapper, various jobfish.
Bream in big numbers in the lower reaches — a few flathead starting to show up. Blue salmon in Mary River. Winter whiting on western side of Woody Island, Point Burnan and off River Heads. Lots of sand crabs in the Bay and muddies in creeks.
Fraser Island

Rainbow Beach Offshore
Some pelagics making an appearance with strong hauls of snapper, pearl perch, tuskfish, hussar, cod, sweetlip and gold spotted wrasse.

Trevally caught Woods Bay, flathead in the canals around Sofitel; bream up and down the river particularly Tewantin between the first lake and marina.

Abundance of sand flathead, and bream around river mouth on incoming tides. Cale cale Trevally, golden trevally and bream around Woods Bay. Frying Pan yielding whiting, flathead, mullet, tailor.

Mooloolaba
Offshore Caloundra wide : snapper & pearl perch. Murphy’s Reef also producing snapper and perch, together with cobia. Snapper being taken at Coolum and along the beaches at Budina — whiting and dart. Garfish and bream in the Mooloolah River, with trevally around the trawler docks.

Good snapper taken in the 5kg to 7kg range between the southern end of Old Woman Island and the end of the Inner Gneerings Shoals; some good spotty mackerel in the same location. Grassy sweetlip, moses perch and spangled emperor at Raper Shoal.

Caloundra
Plenty of fish in passage, bigger bream at night. A lot of trevally and queenfish in canals. Inshore reefs producing excellent snapper and sweetlip. Garfish in the estuaries. Bream and good dart on surf beaches and headlands. On wider reefs – pearl perch, cobia, tuskfish, amberjacks and snapper in better numbers out wider.

Southport
On the 50s: plenty of snapper and pearl perch. Amberjacks and kingfish on live baits on the deeper reefs. On the 24s and 36s: snapper, parrot fish, trag jew on live baits. On the 18s: cobia, snapper, silver jew. Tailor quite prolific on the beaches from the border up to South Straddie – on pilchards, stick baits and metal slugs. Inside the broadwater, squid are going very well and good size flathead back in large numbers. Jew around Jumpinpin and Southport Seaway. Tons of bream around everywhere. Up rivers, bream, good trevally on run-out tide, crabs a bit slow .
