Fishing Report for 19th June 2025

Fishing Report

New lifejacket laws came into effect on December 1, visit MSQ website for details.

New Addition to the Coastwatch fishing report Salty Fishing ChartersCheck out what they have been catching!

Hervey Bay / Fraser Island

Winter whiting have definitely turned up, with good numbers coming from along the Fraser beaches and plenty of families getting amongst them. Fraser Island, Point Vernon, Woodgate Beach, and the flats past Big Woody Island down through the Straits have all been fishing well. At one stage there were up to 36 boats fishing for whiting off Point Vernon alone, which gives you an idea of how good the fishing’s been there. Out in the bay, there have already been a few early whales sighted, which is always a good sign. They’re making their way up the coast now, with more expected soon. Pelagic activity in the bay has mostly been coming from queenfish up towards Rooney Point and around Wathumba to the Six Mile. There’s also been broad-bar mackerel, Spanish mackerel, and the odd big longtail tuna, but the tuna have been tough to tempt, as they’re very flighty at the moment.

On the reefs and gutters, anglers have been catching good numbers of coral trout, cod, grassy sweetlip, and other reef species, mostly on bait or soft plastics fished deep. Snapper have also been coming out of the gutters, and with water temps around 19°C, it shouldn’t be long before the inshore snapper season kicks in properly. The bait hasn’t fully pushed in yet, but with more glass-out days ahead, that will change soon. In the river systems( Burrum and Murrey) and creeks, there have still been a few mud crabs around, with some prawns still in the deeper holes. Grunter and some solid flathead have been caught, along with more winter whiting in the systems as well.

Good news for land-based anglers the Urangan Pier has finally reopened after being closed for a while, and it’s been producing well again.

Tin Can Bay

Winter whiting have been showing up in the bay, with most of the action coming between Carlo Entrance and the power lines. Squid are starting to appear as well, but they’ve still been a bit tricky to find and catch. Flathead have been really good, especially fishing the last couple of hours of the run-out tide, fishing the small drains and rubble patches. Zerek Long Trails 120s and 160mm models have been getting the bites!

Bream are prolific in the creeks, and we’re starting to see the first signs of a few bigger fish moving in. There’s also been some cracking golden trevally and GTs, with micro jigs around 7g to 15g doing the job just find the bait and you’ll find the trevally. There’s been a few up to 60cm caught recently in Snapper Creek and up in T-Bar Creek.

It’s unlikely many will get offshore this weekend with the forecast, but there have been some nice snapper in close around the nursery grounds. Caught either floatlining whole squid & pillies down or working lightly weighted 4 to 5-inch jerkshad plastics both are doing the damage. There’s still good tailor moving through the creeks and around Tin Can Bay Inlet, and trolling small hardbodies has been a fun way to find a few. Any of the rocky ledges and rubble beds in the bay are also holding good estuary cod, both blackspot and goldspot varieties so it’s worth throwing around 4-5in grub-tail plastics or a few jerkshads to catch a feed. There’ve been fish upto 70/80cm landed over the past week, so it’s definitely worth putting in the effort

Maroochydore

There’s been a mix of bream and trevally, including both diamond and golden trevally, through the middle reaches this week. Whiting have been showing down towards the river mouth, along with a few sand crabs through the lower reaches. Mud crabs are still hanging around the upper reaches as well.

Swan Boat Hire

Noosa

There’s been some great fishing reported from Double Island Point, Barwon Banks, and the Hards reefs, with red emperor, scarlet perch, pearl perch, cod, snapper, Moses perch, and sweetlip all in the mix. Up around North Reef and Sunshine, crews have been landing Spanish mackerel, tuna, snapper, Moses perch, and pearl perch.

Good flathead have been caught in the mornings on the ebb tide along the Woods, Frying Pan, and Tewantin areas. Bream are still thick and biting regardless of tide or weather. The bigger golden trevally have also started to show up on their annual migration into the river, with most of the action coming on the top and bottom of the tide.

Noosa River Fishing Safaris
Ph 0429 030 823 | www.noosariverfishing.com

Quality snapper, pearl perch, tuskfish, goldband snapper, cobia, and red emperor have been coming from the wider grounds. In closer around North Reef, the catches have included snapper, pearl perch, sweetlip, and the odd longtail tuna showing up as well.

Noosa Bluewater Charters
Ph (07) 5449 9355 | www.noosabluefishing.com.au

It’s been a bit slow fishing out towards Tewantin lately with the clear water making things a bit tougher, but there’s still been the odd golden trevally and a few big flathead getting around. There are still a fair few mud crabs hanging around towards the marina, but not as many up around Makepeace Island. Down towards the Gympie Terrace area and out the front of the boathouse at the mouth, there’s been a good mix of bream, whiting, and flathead, with plenty of trevally starting to show up as well, which is pretty typical for this time of year. Through the Noosa Woods area, it’s been the usual mix of bream, whiting, and trevally, and most of the mud crabs have been in the back of the sound. No sign of the tailor up here yet, but they should start pushing through soon.

Mooloolaba

Murphy’s Reef has been fishing well with quality snapper and a few cobia turning up. The Caloundra 9 Mile has also produced some good snapper over the past week. In the river, garfish have been showing around Upper Balsa Park, with squid being caught near the trawler docks. Out at Currimundi Reef there’s been grassy sweetlip and snapper on offer. Around the mouth of the Maroochy River, quality jewfish have been landed, and on the inside of the river mouth, tailor have also been caught. Crabs have been a bit quiet, but there’s been some great dart caught along the Kawana Beach stretch.

Caloundra

The weather has been excellent lately, with plenty of glass-out days making for perfect offshore fishing conditions. East of the Caloundra Bar in 50 to 55 metres of water has been fishing really well, with a good haul of tuskfish caught, along with three legal red emperors and a few undersized thrown back. The reds have been taking double paternoster rigs with pilchards, while fresh mullet fillets have been working well for the tuskfish.

There’s been a great variety out wide, including rosy jobfish, sweetlip with red throat, spangled and grassy emperor, along with snapper, pearl perch and the odd hussar. Filleted yakkas have been doing a good job on the snapper, pearlies and emperors. Between the good weather and solid fish numbers, it’s been one of those weeks where everything has lined up nicely.

Cobia have been showing up around the Caloundra 5 Mile, with snapper and pearl perch coming off the 12 Mile. The coffee rock areas have also been fishing well for squire and sweetlip. In the passage, there’s been good numbers of bream, flathead, and tailor around the new bar opening. Trevally and queenfish have been active through the Pelican Waters canals, and there’s been some school jewfish showing up around Lighthouse Reach. Surprisingly, mud crabs are still about in good numbers, with pots producing right across the area.

Northern Moreton Bay

The offshore weather isn’t looking quite as good heading into this weekend, but last weekend produced plenty of snapper, particularly around North Moreton Artificial and the Wild Banks Artificial. A few tailor have been turning up along the Redcliffe foreshore and around the Bribie Bridge at night.

Up the rivers, there’s been good flathead fishing in the Pine and Caboolture Rivers, as well as around the mouths of Ningi and Coochin Creeks, especially on the outgoing tide. The westerly winds have helped the winter whiting fishing at the Cockle Banks, with some great catches reported this week. Mud and Peel Islands are producing good numbers of squid on the high tide in the shallows, and there have been some nice school jew coming from the Pine and Caboolture Rivers, along with the deeper holes in the creeks through the Pumicestone Passage.

Redcliffe Peninsula

Bream, whiting, flathead, and school jew have been active in Hayes Inlet, the Pine River, and Bramble Bay. Yellowfin whiting are showing up in good numbers through Hayes, the Pine, and along the eastern foreshores. Winter whiting have been caught north of Scarborough and through Deception Bay. Snapper and tailor have been coming from the eastern beaches, jetties, rocky points, and inshore grounds. Tailor, school mackerel, mack tuna, longtail tuna, and school jew are all active through Bramble Bay and off Woody Point Jetty, while threadfin salmon are also being found through Bramble Bay, the Pine, and Hayes Inlet.

Sandgate/Shorncliffe Pier

It’s been a great week around the local area, with a bit of everything on offer. There’s been some nice tiger squid showing up around Shorncliffe Pier, with a few quality ones spotted hunting around the footpath area and along the rock groins as well.

Winter whiting have been a bit patchy, but still worth a look. While checking on the usual haunts with live bloodworms, one session produced a nice little flathead always good fun on the light whiting gear before being released to fight another day.

Back on the squid, there’s been some solid schools around, with plenty of tigers moving through. Some have been a bit shy, but there’s usually one or two happy to hit a jig when worked right. Even during the day, they’ve been active, so it’s worth having a go.

A bit of fun, catch of the week goes to Gary, who somehow managed to hook and land an old laptop on light tackle treble right in the corner of the USB port. Certainly not the PB most expect, but definitely one for the books (Photo in Gallery)

Brisbane River

Tailor reports have been coming in from all over, with good numbers turning up right across the bay from Lota and Wynnum through to the mouth of the Brisbane River and around Mud Island. Diver whiting have been holding on the eastern side of Fishermans Island, near the mouth of the Brisbane River, and around the old compass adjustment buoy.

The river itself has been a bit quieter this week, with just a few flathead and the odd school jew showing up, but not much in the way of snapper. Most of the better snapper reports have been from the bay islands, with Harry Atkinson, Mud Island, and the banks back toward Green Island all producing some nice pan-sized fish. Overall, the better fishing has been out around the islands this week, with the river being a bit patchy. Last week’s good run of weather gave anglers a decent window, but the forecast looks like it might turn again over the next few days.

Moreton Bay Offshore

It’s been great fishing most days, with plenty of snapper, tuskfish, pearl perch, trag jew, and cobia coming from east of Moreton Island around the 35-fathom line. Conditions have been favourable, making it well worth the run out wide.

High Calibre Charters

It was a good weekend on the water, with plenty of quality fish caught in close. There were some solid kingfish landed, along with heaps of Moses perch getting around. One of the Moses perch caught was one of the biggest seen in quite a while, making for a standout session.

Nth Stradbroke Island

Whiting have been caught north of the Darcy, with tailor and bream showing up along the Manly foreshore and more tailor at Wellington Point. Snapper have been around Green Island and through parts of the Brisbane River, and squid have been thick around the shallows at Green as well, making for some good mixed catches.

Water Tower Bait & Tackle

Snapper have been coming from all around Moreton Bay, particularly off the artificials like Harry Atkinson and Bulwer Artificial reefs. There’s been a good run of chopper tailor and dart along Main Beach on North Stradbroke Island as well. Some larger tailor are still being caught through the bay, especially around Amity and Victoria Point. Squid have been in really good numbers up on the weed banks, and diver whiting have been consistent at the Maroon Banks. The bream fishing has been solid through the Raby Bay canals, which is typical for this time of year.

Moreton Bay/ Jumpinpin

Moreton Bay has been fishing well, particularly up around the northern sections from Peel northwards, with plenty of bait holding in that area. The northern side of Peel has been producing good numbers of squire and sweetlip. The Brisbane River and Mud Island have also been fishing well, and there have been some great snapper coming from Harry Atkinson Artificial. If you can find a patch of fish and work around the crowds, it’s definitely worth the effort, with some quality fish being caught.

There haven’t been too many pelagics in the northern bay just yet, which could be due to the bait holding further north. The southern bay is still producing good jewfish and threadfin salmon, along with squire and snapper starting to turn up in better numbers. Macleay Island, especially around both the western and eastern sides, has been fishing well, particularly for jewfish and threadfin. As always, the key is finding the bait or the birds, and you’ll generally find fish underneath.

Jumpinpin has also been fishing well, with solid tailor and dart moving through the middle channel on the incoming tide, especially around Crusoe Island. That same middle channel sand bank just north of Crusoe has been holding good numbers of flathead not massive fish, but plenty in the 35 to 45cm range, likely chasing the same bait as the tailor. If you spot birds working, it’s definitely worth having a go there this weekend.

With the water cleaning up nicely now, if you can find that good blue-green water, it’s really making a difference. Good flathead have been caught right throughout the Cabbage Tree Point and Jacobs Well areas, all the way down to the Aldershots and around Sovereign Island. As long as you’re finding bait, you’re in with a good shot of some quality flathead.

The bream are spawning at the moment and are extremely aggressive. The deeper holes closer to the river mouths like Short Island, Kalinga Bank and Crusoe Island are fishing really well, with some cracking fish up into the mid-30cm range, heavy and fat, making for great fun on light gear.

Schools of bigger tailor are starting to move through the beaches of both South and North Stradbroke Islands, while smaller models have been showing up through Jumpinpin. The larger fish have been coming from the surf beaches, so that’s been the better option for those chasing the bigger tailor. Prawns are still about but have been gradually tapering off, while threadfin salmon are still being caught in good numbers. Jewfish have been the highlight this past week, with solid numbers and some quality fish coming from across the Pin. For the bigger jew, try closer to the bar, while further up the system has been better for numbers.

South Stradbroke Island

Mud crabs have been big and rusty lately, with the best results coming from mangrove-lined estuaries like Coombabah Creek, the Coomera River, and the Pimpama River. Tailor have been turning up in the deeper channels of the Broadwater near the Seaway, while yakkas are showing along the pipeline across the Seaway, particularly near the diver’s stairs west of the Seaway Tower. Flathead and whiting have been caught through Tipplers Passage, making for a good spread of options across the area.

Gold Coast Boat Hire

Gold Coast Broadwater

Winds and swell picking up on Saturday before slightly decreasing Sunday. Flathead have been caught this week and with low tide in the morning it should be a great option. Spots have been Crab island, Browns bay, along the main channel of South Stradbroke, Carters bank and the seaway at the base of the rock walls. Squid definitely increased in numbers this week with catches out the front of Runaway Bay marina along the channel south and in front of SeaWorld.

There should be a few whiting up the rivers especially on the evening run in. With the cool brings the bream which can become expensive if you’re using worms. The beaches have been fantastic with good catches of tailor with bream, dart and whiting. Most boats that headed offshore this week encountered a lot of bait SE off the seaway with great catches of cobia. Not that conditions suit this weekend but a thought for when the weather improves.

It’s been longtail tuna central on just about every 12 to 26 fathom spot off the Gold Coast lately. The hungry tuna have been almost impossible to miss, making it a bit tricky to sneak a float bait down for a snapper. Paternoster rigs on the bottom have been the go, producing a mixed bag of teraglin, Moses perch, tuskfish, reef flathead, and snapper

BK’s Gold Coast Fishing Charters

There’s been some nice snapper showing up in close on the reefs and rubble grounds, with pillies being the standout bait. Tailor have been active along the beaches, especially around dawn and dusk, with good numbers up around Jumpinpin. There’s also been reports of squid up towards Jacobs Well, along with a few more tailor in that area too. It’s been a mixed bag overall, with bream and whiting still hanging about, and some good quality flathead caught as well, making for a fairly decent run this week.

Offshore, longtail tuna have been showing up along with cobia and plenty of mac tuna still around. Most of the action has centred on tailor along the beaches, snapper on the reefs, and longtails offshore. Crabs are still quiet which is typical for this time of the year.

Cushy Fishing Charters
Ph 0418 631 076 | www.cushyfishingcharters.com.au

The Tweed River system has been fishing well, especially around the high tide. Flathead have been active, mainly in the one to three metre range, with plenty of fish around the 48 to 50cm mark the perfect eating size. They’ve been pushing up into the shallows, sunning themselves along the banks as the sun rises and the water warms. The drop-offs leading into slightly deeper water have been key spots to target them. The deeper holes throughout the system are holding good numbers of bream at the moment as they move in to spawn. Most anglers have been using prawns or small soft plastics around 2.5 inches, with the S-Tackle Fish Minnow in the 2.5-inch size working best at the moment.

There are still good numbers of trevally in the system too, including GTs, bigeyes, and even some pennant trevally, which are stunning fish and not often seen in big numbers here. Mulloway are still being caught, mostly off the breakwalls and around the bar, with reports right down to Evans Head and Brunswick.

Tailor have been absolutely everywhere, with most of the headlands holding fish. Early mornings and late afternoons have been best, but they’re still being caught during the day on 20 to 40 gram metals or pilchards rigged on 2/0 to 3/0 gangs. Most beaches from the Gold Coast right through to the Tweed are holding tailor, especially on the top of the tide, with schools pushing up in the thousands all the way to Barney’s Point Bridge.

Offshore, there’s been good snapper fishing on the inshore reefs from Brunswick through to the Tweed, with the 24s fishing well. Along with snapper, there have been plenty of pearlies and good numbers of jewfish, particularly around the 24s and 36s. Cobia are still showing up consistently around the Mud Hole and Nine Mile.

Surprisingly, there are still good numbers of Spanish mackerel being caught on trolled bonito and hardbody lures, likely due to the stable offshore water temps. Yellowfin tuna have also moved in, mostly in that jellybean size class around 5 to 8kg perfect fun for the family, and your dog will love you for the crab pot scraps.

There have even been a couple of longtail and southern bluefin tuna showing up, and a few rock wall anglers chasing tailor have tangled with the odd stray bluefin. Out wide, striped marlin and blue marlin are still about, with boats working the 500 to 1000 metre lines. The deep drop season is also in full swing, with bar cod, flame snapper, and hapuku coming from depths between 200 and 800 metres.

Brunswick Heads

Fishing has been firing across the board with excellent conditions over the past week. Offshore, there’s been no shortage of mackerel, longtail tuna, snapper, cobia, kingfish, and pearl perch. Beach and rock anglers have been into good numbers of tailor, dart, and bream, with a few jewfish in the mix as well. The rivers have been producing quality catches of bream, blackfish, mangrove jack, flathead, whiting, and the odd jewfish. Mud crabs are still being caught but have started to slow down over the past few days.

Evans Head

Airforce Beach and Main Beach have been producing good numbers of bream, tailor, flathead, and whiting, with a few jewfish in the mix as well. Around the walls at the mouth, there’s been plenty of bream, tailor, and luderick holding. The Evans River has been fishing well for bream, flathead, and whiting, with the upper reaches still producing a few mud crabs. Offshore, there have been consistent catches of snapper, trag, and jewfish.

Yamba

Offshore is still fishing really well, with heaps of tuna around both off the rocks and from the boats. There’s been a solid mix of mack tuna and longtails in the schools. Snapper fishing has also been consistent, particularly to the north and south, with good reports from Evans Reef, Black Rock, Shelly Headland, and Brooms Head. Along with the snapper, there’s still been plenty of pearl perch coming in. Not much news on cobia just yet, but with the whales starting to push through, that should improve soon.

The river is starting to fish well again, with bream and flathead showing up throughout. The catfish have quietened down as the dirty water clears. The ocean rocks have been producing good numbers of bream and blackfish, along with plenty of tailor many of them quality fish around the 1.5 to 2kg mark. Jewfish have been a bit quieter lately due to the calm conditions, but as soon as the swell picks up again, that should fire back up too.

FRESHWATER FISHING

Wivenhoe Dam

Whivenhoe Dam has been fishing quite well too, with some solid bass coming from the northern reaches. Areas from Logan’s Inlet up towards Hammond Cove, and further again, have been producing on crankbaits fished along the edges. Metal spoons have been working once you get into the deeper water. Out in the main basin of the dam, there have been fish found from Hayes Landing through to Billy’s Bay, down to the buoy line, and back across to Platypus Cliffs, with metal spoons and soft plastics doing the damage.

Moogerah Dam

Moogerah Dam, has been a bit of a grind. It took around six hours to get the first bite recently, with the fish there a bit shut down due to the increased fishing pressure. Hopefully, conditions will improve soon, but for now, the other dams are definitely fishing better.

Charltons Fishing
Ph (07) 3818 1677 | www.charltonsfishing.com.au

Hinze Dam

Hinze Dam on the Gold Coast has also been producing some great bass. Good fish have been coming from the western arms, all the way up the backs of the bays and points. Crankbaits and spinnerbaits worked around the standing timber have been really productive. In the deeper water, anglers have been having success with metal spoons fished around submerged timber. Towards the dam wall itself, soft plastics rolled along the drop-offs and points have been a reliable choice, with metal spoons also picking up fish.

Over at North Pine Dam (Lake Samsonvale), the edges have been fishing well for land-based anglers. Spinnerbaits, metal spoons, and soft plastics rolled across the bottom have all picked up some solid bass. During winter, the bass tend to school up on the deeper points, making metal spoons and soft plastics ideal. For those fishing from the banks, early morning and late afternoon have been the best times to target fish.

Kurwongbah

Kurwongbah has been fishing really well. A few anglers fished there over the weekend and landed some quality bass. It’s predominantly a quieter fishery due to it being paddle-craft only, although there are a few spots where you can fish from the bank. The weed beds throughout the dam are holding really good fish, and small jerkbaits, crankbaits, and spinnerbaits fished along the edges of those weed beds have been working well. Small blades are also a great option this time of year, especially as the bass tend to school up on the points in slightly deeper water. Quarter-ounce metal blades fished slowly through those areas have been effective. As you head further up the dam, deeper water around the points is a good spot to throw blades, crankbaits, or chatterbaits. There are also some big Saratoga in Kurwongbah, and it’s worth casting spinnerbaits into the smaller bays or around the shallower timber late in the afternoon when the water warms up.

Charltons Fishing

Lake Lenthalls – Lake Monduran

Lenthalls Dam has also been fishing well, with some nice barra up to the metre mark being caught, mainly by anglers using live-scope setups and big swimbaits or Jackall hardbodies in the shallows and around the bays. Lentil’s Dam has been a bit quieter on reports, but a few smaller fish have still been coming from out that way.

Fishing Report

Snapper, a few grassy sweetlip and coral trout on the inshore reefs, longtail and mack tuna in the shipping channels and near the artificial reefs, bream, flathead...
