The annual barramundi closed season along Queensland’s east coast starts from midday 1st November to midday 1st February 2024 except in stocked impoundments.

Hervey Bay

Spanish, spotty, school and broad barred mackerel in the main shipping channels, spotty mackerel, longtail and mack tuna in Platypus Bay, coral trout, cod, sweetlip, blackall and pencil squid on the inshores at Moon Ledge, Big Woody Island and Gatakers Bay, trevally, queenfish, school and broad barred mackerel off the Urangan jetty, garfish around the rock groynes, threadfin salmon, grunter bream and school jew in the Mary and Susan Rivers and flathead, grunter bream and mangrove jack in the Burrum River.

Rainbow Beach Offshore

Pearl perch, amberjack, moses perch and cobia about 20nm NE of Wide Bay bar and snapper, hussar, tuskfish, wrasse and cod about 5nm east.

Tin Can Bay

Queenfish and mack tuna at Inskip Point, flathead on the flats in Tin Can Inlet, sand whiting on the making tide in Teebar Creek, blue salmon between Garry’s Anchorage and Fig Tree Creek, mangrove jack in the creeks and squid around the moored boats.

Noosa

Flathead, bream and whiting at the Noosa River mouth, flathead, bream and trevally in Woods Bay and it would be worth setting a few pots for mud crabs.

Flathead and estuary cod along the Tewantin reach of the Noosa River, flathead and trevally in Woods Bay and sand whiting and grunter bream in Lake Cooroibah.

Pearl perch, snapper, tuskfish, amberjack and cobia at Chardons, Sunshine and North Reefs.

Pearl perch, sweetlip, cobia and spotty mackerel on Sunshine Reef and snapper and moses perch at North Reef.

Maroochydore

Bream throughout the Maroochy River, trevally between Chambers Island and Eudlo Creek, flathead around Goat Island and the mouth of Petrie Creek, sand whiting along Black Bank inside the river mouth and a few mud crabs in the middle reaches.

Mooloolaba

Spotty and school mackerel near the Mooloolaba blinker, dart and a few tailor along the beaches, flathead in the lower reaches of the Mooloolah River and mangrove jack and trevally around the bridge pylons and rock walls.

Black marlin and tuna on the Barwon Banks, black marlin 12nm east of Mooloolaba and mahi mahi around the FADs.

Caloundra

Snapper, cobia, spanish and spotty mackerel on the inshore reefs, mahi mahi around the FADs, dart, whiting and flathead along the beaches, flathead, bream and whiting in Pumicestone Passage, mangrove jack in the creeks and canals and it would be worth setting a few pots for mud crabs.

Donnybrook

Sand whiting at the mouth of Coochin, Hussey and Elimbah Creeks, flathead along the drop offs, school jew at 112, mud crabs in the deeper holes and sand crabs off Toorbul.

Bribie Island

Flathead and whiting around Sandstone Point and at White Patch, sand whiting at Woorim, Red Beach and Skirmish Point, estuary cod under the Bribie Bridge, trevally and mangrove jack in Pacific Harbour canals and sand crabs in the main channel.

Northern Moreton Bay

Longtail and mack tuna off Tangalooma and in the northern bay, school mackerel near the old four beacons and off the southern end of Bribie Island, snapper around Mud Island, Curtin artificial reef and the Redcliffe inshores, mangrove jack and mud crabs in the upper reaches of the rivers and creeks and sand crabs in Bramble Bay.

Redcliffe Peninsula

Snapper, bream and sweetlip around the inshores, rocky points and jetties, bream, whiting and flathead in Hays Inlet and the Pine River, mangrove jack and grunter bream in the Pine River and Newport canals, sand crabs off Scarborough and in Bramble Bay and mud crabs in the rivers and creeks.

Moreton Bay Offshore

Snapper, pearl perch and tuskfish on the 29s.

Brisbane River – Northern Moreton Bay

Wahoo and spanish mackerel off the Cape, school mackerel in the Rous Channel and between the Hope Banks and Harry Atkinson artificial reef, diver whiting and flathead on the eastern side of Fisherman Islands, snapper, flathead and school jew in the lower reaches of the Brisbane River and mud crabs in the creeks.

Wynnum Manly

Diver whiting and school mackerel in the Rous Channel, diver whiting in Fishermans Gutter, Maroon channel and north of the D’Arcy Light, snapper and sweetlip around Mud and Green Islands and tiger squid in the Rainbow Channel.

Nth Stradbroke Island

Fish all beaches for dart, whiting, flathead and chopper tailor.

Redland Bay

Diver whiting and school mackerel in the Rous Channel, diver whiting on the Chain Banks, grassy sweetlip around Peel Island, sand whiting at the mouth of Tingalpa Creek and bream in Raby Bay canals.

Snapper around Coochiemudlo Island and flathead and bream between the Pin Bar and southern end of Canaipa Passage.

Jumpinpin

Flathead in Tipplers Passage, along Crusoe, Tabby Tabby and Dinner Islands, sand whiting at the NW end of South Straddie and near Marks Rocks in the Logan River, bream at the stockyards and tailor between the Pin Bar and Crusoe Island.

Mangrove jack around the snaggy banks in the Coomera River, bream near Jacobs Well jetty and mud crabs in the Logan River.

Southport

Snapper and tailor in Southport Seaway, flathead, whiting, queenfish and sand crabs in Southport Broadwater and mangrove jack and trevally around the bridge pylons, rock walls and snaggy banks in the rivers and creeks.

Black marlin in 60 to 80 metres east of Southport, mahi mahi around the FADs, flathead and whiting in Southport Broadwater and tailor in the surf at South Straddie.

Currumbin

Spotty mackerel at Palm Beach Reef, dart and whiting along the beaches, flathead, bream and whiting in the lower reaches of the creeks and mangrove jack around the bridge pylons and snaggy banks.

Tweed Coast

Flathead, bream, whiting and trevally in the lower reaches of the Tweed River.

Snapper and tuskfish on the 30s east of the Tweed.

Pottsville

Dart, tarwhine, bream and a few tailor along the beaches, bream, flathead and whiting in the mid to upper reaches of the creeks, mangrove jack around the snaggy banks and luderick close to the rock walls in the lower reaches.

Evans Head

Snapper, pearl perch and trag jew at Kahors Reef, bream, flathead, whiting and a few mulloway along the beaches, flathead, bream and school jew along the rock walls at the Evans River mouth, flathead, bream and whiting in the lower reaches and mud crabs in the upper reaches.

FRESHWATER FISHING

Boondooma Dam

The dam has had a rise in water level to about 76% capacity. Bass and golden perch on trolled hard bodies around the Junction, Barbers Pole and the start of the Stuart River.

Bjelke Petersen Dam

Bass on trolled hard bodies around Bass Point, Lightning Ridge and the old creek bed.

Lenthalls Dam

Bass on trolled hard bodies off the deep points and barramundi at dawn and dusk on surface lures around the dam edges.

Lake Monduran

Barramundi on trolled hard bodies and large swim baits in the main basin.

Borumba Dam

Saratoga at dawn and dusk on surface lures along the weed edges.

Lake Kurwongbah

Saratoga on surface lures early morning and bass on chatter baits during the day around the dam edges.

Lake Samsonvale

Saratoga at dawn and dusk on surface lures around the dam edges.

Hinze Dam

Bass located with sounder on trolled deep divers in the deeper parts.

Somerset Dam

Bass on large crank baits and chatter baits in about 25 feet around Pelican Point and Bay 13.

Moogerah Dam

Bass on chatter baits in about 15 to 20 feet towards the timber in the upper reaches of the dam.

Maroon Dam

Bass early morning on small poppers and creature baits around the dam edges and during the day on dark coloured lipless crank baits close to the sunken timber in the creek arm.
